Unseized Moments
A detailed piece by Golf World's Jaime Diaz, where he takes a long hard look at Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els and their efforts to ddo the unthinkable and claim the no.1 golfer spot this year. His thesis is that while both are playing extraordinarily well, the current no.1 still casts a long shadow. And the pressure's on.

Open thoughts
Congratulations to Todd Hamilton for his win in the British Open. I'm sure this time there will be no cynics suggesting it was anything less than deserved. He held his nerve and played some great golf. And his victory speech was very kind - praising everyone else except himself.
Elsewhere, Jonathan Byrd won the BC Open. Fred Funk -- who "infamously" skipped the Open to try for Ryder Cup points in the US -- was T40.
On the LPGA, Moira Dunn lifted the Giant Eagle LPGA Classic trophy and $150,000.

In defence of Ben
With the Open a day or two away, a lot of articles are floating around about what a travesty and disappointment it was that Ben Curtis won last year, and how a player like him doesn't deserve a major title. It's almost like they want him to apologize for having the temerity to have held off the (less than impressive) challenge from the top stars in 2003.
What a terrible attitude. If you only want the top players to win, then restrict the field to the top 30 on the money list. You can't tell me that the winner after four rounds of golf is down to luck. Luck played a part, but so did good golf. Curtis's career is still young, so let's not write him off as a journeyman just yet. And his behavior since the win, playing around the world and becoming a European Tour member shows a respect for the game of golf that you don't get from many - take note all those US professionals who didn't even bother to turn up to the US qualifying for this weekend's Open.
Ben Curtis has conducted himself like a champion since his win. Which can't be said of those who ridicule him from the safety of their desks.

Seems a USGA official suggested that Ernie Els gave up in the last round of the US Open. And the latter is not pleased - looks like once the British Open is over he'll be headed over to New Jersey carrying just a 3 wood.

British Open note
As is traditional here, I won't be doing the newsy stuff on the British Open as me and my little PC are no competition for the big media guys. But since the US Open didn't give us a great story aka Mickelson at the Masters, look for the golf gods to throw us a good line at this major. What price a victory for Colin Montgomerie?
