PGA Tour Professional Jeff Sluman, OfficeMax Team Up to Fight Cancer
A good as reason as any to cheer on Jeff Sluman over the next three years is that every birdie and eagle he scores triggers a donation to various charities from OfficeMax. All power to his driver.

Golden Bear made it out of the woods, but can Tiger?
I'm not mad keen on pointing out yet another "What's wrong with Tiger?" article, but this one draws interesting parallels with a 2-year major drought suffered by a 29 year-old Jack Nicklaus. And we all know what happened there...

US Open reflections
Based on all the articles I've reviewed over the last couple of days, here's a quick summary of the tournament for you, as seen from the media perspective...
1. Retief Goosen won, which is fine as he deserved it, but Phil Mickelson winning would have been nicer (but nobody wants to offend Retief by saying this too loudly).
2. The course setup was a terrific challenge for the world's best golfers / a disgrace to the game of golf (depending on who you read)
3. Tiger Woods is in a slump and in imminent danger of ending his career collecting balls for a living at his nearby driving range / Tiger Woods is THIS close to rediscovering the swing that won all those majors, and in imminent danger of stringing together a run of wins (depending on who you read).
4. It was great to see David Duval back, but we were kind of hoping he might play a little better.

Woods still on top of his endorsement game
One of those behind-the-scenes articles that explores the endorsement value of Tiger Woods, and considers whether his recent form has any impact on this value. Without spoiling the article for you, let's just say that Nike aren't too worried just yet.

Taking home the goldfish from this weekend's golf country fair...
Philippe Lima won the Aa St Omer Open in France for his second consecutive tournament victory.
On the LPGA, Cristie Kerr birdied the last hole to take the ShopRite LPGA Classic by one stroke from Giulia Sergas and amateur Paula Creamer.
Oh yeah, and there was a small tournament going on somewhere in New York. Won by a guy named Retief Goosen.

Starting the day shutter bugged
It's a favorite topic of mine, but anytime we start to rag on Tiger Woods for not being the greatest human being on the planet all the time, we need to read articles like this. Neil Best describes the typical pressures he's under just while practicing.

Golf in Kabul loaded with hazards
...lest we forget that not everyone has access to the delights of a Shinnecock Hills. Quote: "Although golfers should feel relatively confident they will not lose a foot when their drive lands in the middle of the fairway, I think it is still a good idea to stay alert and keep your head down when walking the course,"

2004 US Open
As is usual policy here, I shan't be trying to compete with the big media sites and their dozens of staff when it comes to covering a major.
But I just want to let out a general whoop of excitement at the coming US Open. For two reasons...
First, it's living up to its name because there's no clear favorite. Els, Singh, Woods, Mickelson, Garcia and others are all looking good. So we might be in for a scrap.
Second, it marks the long-awaited return of David Duval. I don't see how he can win it. But the golf gods are a fickle bunch. And just imagine the story that would make...Mickelson and Duval as the winners of the first two majors of the year. Mmmm.

Sweden's Annika Sorenstam, who chalked up her seventh major with victory in the McDonald's LPGA Championship.
Spain's Sergio Garcia, who beat Padraig Harrington and Rory Sabbatini in a playoff to win the Buick Classic.
In Europe, Miles Tunnicliff won the Diageo Championship at Gleneagles.

Qualification round up
As the dust settles on qualification for the US Open, time to look over some of the shocks and surprises.
Some of the big names we'll see after all at Shinnecock include Tom Kite, Nick Faldo, Jay Haas (and his son) and Aaron Baddeley.
But there are some notable omissions - big names who didn't make it through include Tom Lehman, Jesper Parnevik, Matt Kuchar, Luke Donald, Frank Lickliter II, Mark O'Meara, Iam Woosnam and Jeff Sluman.

Getting the biggest piece of pecan pie at the weekend were...
Belly putter nemesis and wine grower Ernie Els, who fended off a challenge from a resurgent Fred Couples to win the Memorial Tournament.
Meanwhile on the Champions Tour, Jim Thorpe broke his duck for the year, with a victory at the Farmers Charity Classic.
On the LPGA, Karrie Webb returned to fomr with a five shot victory in the Kellogg-Keebler Classic.
And in Europe, the Welsh Open went to an Englishman...Simon Khan.

New books on Ben Hogan
Browsing around Amazon I discoverd two books on the man. One is "Ben Hogan: An American Life" by James Dodson, a big time biography which weighs in at 544 pages. The other is "Afternoons With Mr. Hogan: A Boy, a Golf Legend, and the Lessons of a Lifetime" by Jody Vasquez, who regales the reader with anecdotes from his times shagging golf balls for the founder of modern golf.

Ugly reaction to Wie's Open exemption
Brian Hewitt offers a counterpoint to those arguing against the exemption granted to Michelle Wie for the US Women's Open.
He mentions that some of the arguments used have racist overtones, something that Tiger Woods suffers from. I can confirm that. A small minority of the comments that come in about Woods (and Vijay Singh) though the fan comments page are pure racist hate. And not welcome here.

This golfing life
Even though the playing life of a top golfer is considerably longer than in most sports, there's no escaping the inevitable. Browsing the golf news sites today I was struck by how forlorn Colin Montgomerie and Ian Woosnam sounded. Both guys have given golf fans a lot of pleasurable moments, and both now struggle to either regain lost form or find their way in a life that really is about more than just hitting balls into holes. Hope they succeed.
