Annika Sorenstam to be honored at writers awards dinner
News that she's to get the Gold Tee award from the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association. I wonder if she has enough mantelpieces for all these awards and trophies.

Here's a long article where you can meet some of the actors playing in the forthcoming movie about Bobby Jones. I'm not sure whether you'd survive a round of golf with Malcolm McDowell. It's a long way from the sex pistols to Augusta.

World Match Play
This weekend sees the top golfers go head to head at the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship. The most intriguing tie of the first round looks to be Phil Mickelson against Lee Westwood, two of the "comeback" players of 2003/2004.

This weekend's winners...
Congratulations to Mike Weir for successfully defending his Nissan Open title, despite a late charge by Shigeki Maruyama. And a big hand for Mark McNulty, winning the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am in his Champions Tour debut. And perhaps the biggest cheer to ex-Paratrooper Thongchai Jaidee, who became the first Thai to win a European Tour event, at the Carlsberg Malaysian Open.

Monday, February 23, 2004

Story of the day
Apparently, Colin Montgomerie got hit by bird shit while playing at the Malaysian Open. It's not clear whether this was a good or bad omen.

Peter Jacobsen and Lexus
The two have signed a five-year partnership, so he'll be wearing their logo during tournaments. Jacobsen was voted comeback player of the year last year, a year in which he won the Greater Hartford Open; 23 years after his very first tour win at the 1980 Buick-Goodwrench Open.

Nissan Open
Today sees the start of the Nissan Open at the Riviera Country Club in California. It's a tournament Tiger Woods hasn't won yet, so expect him to be up for it. And John Daly's on a roll, obviously. But back-to-back wins aren't easy. Vijay Singh has something to prove after blowing his top-10 streak by missing the cut last week. But my money's on someone else taking home the win. Perhaps one of the in-form players of recent tournaments - a Parnevik or Donald?

What Now for David Duval?
One for all you Duval fans. Long, long look at his recent "problems" (though it's wrong to call them problems since he himself says your worth as a person isn't defined by your golfing prowess), littered with reflections and quotes on the pertinent issues from the man himself and fellow golfers.

No perfect attendance
Nice article about who's playing, who's not and who's playing who at the forthcoming WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship at the end of this month. Including the news that Kirk Triplett's withdrawn so he can be best man at a friend's wedding. Good sense of priorities that man.

Congratulations No.3
...goes to Craig Stadler for his fourth Champions Tour victory, coming in the ACE Group Classic. Like Daly, he tirumphed in a playoff, against Gary Koch and Tom Watson.

Monday, February 16, 2004

Congratulations No.2
...goes to John Daly, winning his first PGA Tour event in some nine years. The previews talked up a Singh / Mickelson / Woods showdown, but Singh missed the cut, while the latter two "rescued" top 10 results thanks to excellent final rounds. And Daly astounded us all with a fantastic win, confirming the return to form he showed late last year.

Transsexual makes golf history
Adding another dimension to the current Sorenstam/Wie/Davies-inspired gender debate in professional tournament golf, transsexual Mianne Bagger will play in March's women's Australian Open. (Insert suitable Vijay Singh and Greg Norman comment joke.)
Here's a follow-up commentary article in The Age.

Monday, February 16, 2004

Congratulations No.1
...goes to Brian Davis, who won the ANZ Championship on Sunday, a point ahead of last year's winner, Paul Casey. He attributed his win to some putting tips from fellow competitor Gary Evans. Which continued the championship theme, since third round leader Steve Webster put his performance down to some swing guidance from Ian Woosnam.

Davies rules out a repeat
After her last-but-one performance at the ANZ Championship, Laura Davies has ruled out accepting any more invitations to play in a "men's" tournament. Bravo to her for giving it a go though.

Ben Curtis Day
Yep, yesterday was officially declared "Ben Curtis Day" in the city of Kent, Ohio. The 2003 British Open winner attended an evening of celebrations. Judging by the quotes in this article, he's a generous and modest fellow.

Amateur paid $1,000 a hole to play with Tiger
Nice story about insurance salesman Dave Smith, who got to play with Tiger Woods in the Buick Invitational Pro-Am. Cost him $18,000, and his wife didn't speak to him for four days after he told her how much he'd paid. He got off lightly. I wouldn't have a wife anymore if I'd done that.

UCLA freshman describes his day as the thrill of a lifetime.
Web diary of Chris Heintz, who is playing as an amateur in this week's Buick Invitational. He describes his practice round with none other than Tiger Woods. He got the honor simply by going up to Tiger as the latter came onto the course and saying, "Do you mind if I join you?". Very cool.

Tiger is a poa pussycat
Jeff Shelley has a fairly extensive dig at Tiger Woods for not playing the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am last week. I'm picking up various vibes from around the golf world that some people aren't thrilled at his sporadic tournament attendance. Expect that debate to continue, though my view is that any Tiger is better than no Tiger and the demands on his time and psyche must be unimaginable to mere mortals like myself.

No Europeans in golf's top 10
Despite winning the Ryder Cup last year, it seems European golfers are slipping down the rankings. Though they do hold 11th (Harrington) and 12th (Clarke) place, so it won't take much to redress the balance.

Weekend winners
Exciting times, as it looks like Tiger Woods may at last face some real challenges for that no.1 spot this season. Ernie Els and Vijay Singh won their respective tournaments at the weekend, And Phil Mickelson came in third behind Singh, to continue his great start to the year. Now, imagine if a certain Mr.Duval were to return with a bang and we could be in for some fun.

Marketing Ploy? Greg Should be Thankful
George White of the Golf Channel adds his considered voice to the "should women play the PGA Tour?" debate. His line of thought is that the financial strength of the game is down to marketing, so why the criticism of marketing ploys? And what's the difference between an exemption for a Michelle Wie or Annika Sorenstam and one for some NFL star (who can't play as well as either)?
