COMMENTS FROM 2005:

Luke Easter contributes "Farewell to a Champion":

Golf is a game of the heart,
With a love that's meant to last,
This brings to mind Payne Stewart,
A class act for sure has passed.

Flying high in the wild blue yonder,
Above the masses below,
Payne and those who were with him,
Why did they have to go?

He was more than just the clothes,
This loving husband and father of two,
That's the number of U.S. Opens won,
Why? What did he do?

A champion of the greens,
A master when buried in the sand,
On his way to the TPC,
The Lord had other plans.

Payne birdies 18 to finish at 60,
The site is so clear in my mind,
But with an 80-foot eagle for the win,
God shoots a 59.

Payne extends his hand with a smile,
Congratulating God for a record back 9,
All the while thinking to himself,
God I'll get you next time.

A lifetime of fond memories,
Doing what he loved to do,
In our hearts he'll be here forever,
Even though he's gone at 42!

Kevin Harvey, Colchester, Essex, United Kingdom writes:

In rememberance of a golfer
Who deserved our applause
Whose unequalled signature
Was wearing plus fours

The gentleman to whom I elude
Was a giant in the game
But wearing plus fours
Is why most remember his name

So individual his look
And unequalled his style
He usually played the game
While wearing a broad smile

This poem I have written
For a man I admired
God bless you Payne Stewart
Though your life has expired

A Father and Son in Canada say:
"A true champion taken from us far too soon.  Next weekend my  11 year old son and I will continue a tradition that started in '99. We will sit down on Fathers Day afternoon and watch the final round of the US Open. We of course will have already completed our traditional Fathers Day - 18 Holes just in time to get home for the tee off of the final pairings.

This year will be special as we watch the same holes being played as we did that first time he came and sat with me, to watch golf, back in '99.  My son is a junior golfer with dreams of a scholarship to a US college and a chance at the PGA TOUR.

I was unaware of it till last night but that Fathers Day back in '99, my son (then 5 years old) found his golf hero, Payne Stewart, or as my son called him, "Mr. US OPEN."  He was and still is really unaware of how true this statment was; Payne Stewart will always be the US Open Champion in the eyes of my son.

That day Payne Stewart had such a positive influence on my son that the boy wants to do nothing but golf as much as possible.  My son is now 11 years old and Payne is still his favorite golfer.  He has been watching the golf channel all week to catch any shows about Payne or replays of the '99 OPEN.

Last night (June 9/05) we watched a golf channel replay of the '99 OPEN and as Payne sank that putt on the 72nd hole I noticed tears in my son's eyes.

I said nothing to him but he knew I saw the tears. He looked at me and said "Dad if I ever get to play in a US OPEN can I wear clothes like Payne Stewart?".  I asked him why. His answer was "just to remember him and show people that he is still my favorite golfer."  Payne Stewart truely a first class champion and role model.  We miss him."

Bob Wilson, Northolt, England writes:
"As Pinehurst #2 comes around again, all fans of golf all over the world must turn to Mr. Stewart. He of the immaculate swing, the style, the grace, the man. I am not an overly religeous man, quite the opposite in fact. But if Payne found solace in christianity, who am I to argue. To Tracy and his children, may your god go with you, and may you find comfort in your beliefs, but mostly by the fact that in your affirmation with Mr. Stewart you were truly touched by god. With respect."

Sarah C. from Michigan says:
"It has been years since Payne was taken from us but I still find myself thinking of him, missing him, and wishing he was here. It's the time surrounding major tournaments that are the hardest for me...congrats to Tiger...I still miss Payne."

A visitor writes:
"What can I say about Payne Stewart? He was and is... my favorite golfer of all-time. I thoroughly enjoyed watching him play, and his style of golf atire, was awesome! He was a generous, and down-to-earth gentleman who loved the game of golf and the love he had for his family was a special one. I remember the day when he won the 1999 US Open. The smile on his face said it all. I also can remember where I was, when I heard he had passed away. There will never be another like him. He was and is the greatest golfer."

Bo Broock - Michigan says:
"Loving husband, devoted father, Champion golfer: courteous, gracious yet fiercely competitive - a gentleman! We may not see his like again."

Matthew Carlson writes:
"Payne Stewart was a great golfer and person."
