Katie Sluman from Ontario, Canada writes:
"I am a relative of Jeff's but I have never had the honor to meet him
because I am all the way in Canada. My family and I watch him play and he is
great. I only watch golf to see him play."
COMMENTS FROM 2004:
RL, Rockville asks:
"I notice Jeff hasn't played the last three tournaments, unusual for him, anybody know if he's injured, or if there is any other specific reason for him not playing?"
Wayne D. Rochester, NY
writes:
"I have been acquainted with Jeff since he and his family were members of
Craig Hill CC in Rochester, NY. As a youngster he was impressive in his demeanor and
I must say, in that regard he has never forgotten his roots. As well as many other fans,
I follow Jeff's career at every turn, and only hope that he will someday become a member of the Ryder Cup team as
I know of his capabilities in match play. (ie. world match play one year when he beat a host of top
players.) I would also love nothing better than for Jeff to look into Golf Broadcasting in the near future and know that any network would be fortunate to have him in the booth not only for his knowledge, but equally for his great humor and storytelling. There must be a reason that John Feinstein quotes him so often in A Good Walk Spoiled."
Danny Andrews, editor
of the Plainview, Texas Daily Herald sent us this (Dr.Hart kindly
gave us permission to reprint his article):
"Thought you might enjoy this column written by Dr. Travis Hart, pastor of First Baptist Church in Plainview, Texas, for his "Hartbeat" column in our church paper.
Thanks for setting the good example.
"Jeff Sluman did an unusual thing this past weekend. He turned himself in to the PGA authorities and the ruling for his actions led to his disqualification from the Buick Open in Harrison, N.Y.
What did Sluman do that was so terrible it led to being disqualified from the tournament? Did he cheat on his score card? Did he improve his lie without permission? Did he shoot out of turn? No to all the above.
So what did Jeff Sluman do? Are you ready for this -- he used a ball without the official PGA imprint -- that's all he did. But it was enough to be forced out of the tournament.
The issue here is not Sluman's disqualification. The issue is Sluman's honesty. I am sure he could have slyly exchanged the wrong ball for the one that met tournament regulations without being noticed. But he didn't. Instead, he notified the proper officials of his mistake and suffered the consequences.
I wish we had more people like Jeff Sluman around these days. Men who will admit their mistake even if it is costly. Sergio Garcia won the Buick Open but Jeff Sluman won the victory."
Doug Hill from Rochester, N.Y.
writes:
"Jeff Sluman turns himself in for using a nonconforming ball? That shows the integrity and honor that Jeff has shown his whole life. Having had the pleasure of knowing him as a teenager, this does not surprize me at all. As a teenager, Jeff could have become a Professional Bowler as well. He used to beat me regularly, as well as many other friends. He was as gracious a winner as a loser. I truly enjoy hearing about the great things he does for the sport. Can't wait for him to hit the Senior tour also."
Jeff Z. Rochester, NY
asks:
"Anyone know why Jeff Sluman got DQ'd from the Buick?" (Editor's
note: he mistakenly used a ball that wasn't properly labelled - it didn't
have the markings that indicate it to be a conforming ball)
D.E. from Tennessee
says:
"I have followed Sluman's career since he signed a scholarship with Tennessee Tech University (before he transferred to Florida St.) I look for his name on every leaderboard and follow him in the newspaper and on the net. When he misses the cut, I often do not even watch the rest of the tourney.
I wonder if he is injured at this time (June, 2004), He has been conspicously absent from the last couple of tourneys and is not having his normal consistent year.
I can hardly wait until he's 50 because he is going to do some damage on the Senior Tour if I am any judge.
I know he has thousands of fans in Tennessee and I agree with other people on this site who feel Slu is slighted by the media. However, the Golf Channel commentators seem to give him plenty of credit when he's
on screen.
He has acquired quite a bit of national attention. He is featured in full page ads for Polo Golf along with Tom Watson and Davis Love III. That's some pretty still company.
Anyway, I love to watch Slu play golf and hope he gets back in form for the Memorial. He tees off at 9:20 on Thursday, playing with Cink and Goosen."

"How about a video for 5' 8" golfers? I would like to hit a golf ball 200 yards plus like
Jeff."
MN from Rochester
says:
"I am from Rochester and have followed Jeff throughout his wonderful career. It is incredible to me how he has been so consistent all these years and can at age 46 still compete with all the youngsters on the tour. Keep it up Jeff!"
A Slufan writes:
"I am from Rochester, NY and have followed Jeff's career for a long time. I
have heard rumors that he may have some kind of a hand injury. Can anyone provide me with any information on this?"
Bill M. from SaddleBrooke AZ
says:
"As a former Rochesterian I follow Jeff Sluman with interest. He is one ot the best players on tour and consistently winds up in the top 30 or so on the money list. It bugs me that he is usually absent from the notables list either in the sports pages in the newspapers or on the tv coverage. Some of the so-called notables are, in my opinion not so notable and in many cases, upstarts or has beens."
COMMENTS FROM 2003:
Sammy C. from Rochester,
NY writes:
"I play golf myself and I know how tough it is not to lose your
cool. I've watched Jeff play for a number of years and I've never seen
him get upset no matter what. I don't know how he does it."
Kevin W. from Massachusetts
says:
"Ran into Jeff Sluman while vacationing in Las Vegas, he couldn't have been more gracious. A guy with integrity and personality, an easy guy to root for each week."
Steve Williams of Atlanta, Georgia
writes:
"Jeff Sluman obtained a loyal fan at the 2002 year end Players Championship at the East Lake
Country Club in Atlanta, Georgia.
I am a +1 handicap golfer who until that tournament had never been able to interest my 10 year old daughter in the game. I had purchased
a tournament flag from the PGA tent for my daughter who attended the Friday round of the tournament with me. My daughter thought
that it would be nice to get some autographs on the flag so we went to the range where the players would be practicing after Fridays round. Jeff Sluman
walked by after practicing and my daughter was to shy to ask for his autograph and started crying after he went past. He heard her and very politely came
back and signed the flag for her and then went over to sign for other individuals.
After he finished signing for others he looked over and saw that she was still upset. He then came back over and signed the palm his glove for her (which is framed with the flag in our rec room) and literally made her day. Now Jeff Sluman is a giant among all golfers to her. Now weekly she tracks how Mr. Sluman is doing at every tournament. She now is interested in golf and we will spend a lot of quality time together on the range and course thanks to one very special memory of a concerned understanding professional.
Jeff Sluman, I Thank You"
COMMENTS FROM 2002:
Kevin from Wisconsin
says:
"He cares about the integrity of the game (Bay Hill self disqualification). I think he was done a great disservice by the NEC invitational folks. He should have been allowed to play in the invitational. He was 48th on the money list going into the PGA. He finished 23rd against the toughest field all year and dropped out of the top 50. Therefore he doesn't get to play. It doesn't seem right or fair."
Tom B. from Marshfield WI admires him:
...because he is about the same size as I am (5'7") and his swing is so
effortless, what I like to call "effortless power instead of a powerful effort."
