"What a sad day this must be for the Jack Nicklaus Family, with his Grandson, Jake Walter losing his young life. Mr. Nicklaus, my prayers and thoughts are with you, your son and the entire Nicklaus Family at this sad time. There must be a great plan of God's, that at times makes little sense to us. You and your son, Steve are well admired world-wide, the number of prayers for you all will surely wisk young Jake Walter into the arms of God swiftly. We share in your sorrow and pray for your understanding."

"As much as a genius as Tiger is, he has his work well and truly cut out to catch Jack. Aside from Jack's phenomenal 18 major wins please never ever forget he was runner-up in NINETEEN majors as well (and 3rd in nine). He suffered defeat against greats like Watson, Palmer and Trevino with the utmost humility. The Greatest Sportsman of all-time. A Family Man."

"Recently Jack has been berating his game on TV and I suggest he should stop. I'm 57 and greatly enjoy Jack being out there working legimately to beat the PGA cut. He says that isn't competitve, but you know Jack, it is: there are a lot of super golfers on the PGA tour who are working hard to make the cut. So ease up on yourself and let us enjoy your fine efforts."

"It is sad to see less of Jack on tv. I was wishing he would play the Bear Trace course in Winchester Tn. I only live 12 miles from the course and would like to see him play one more time."

"Mr. Jones said: "Jack plays a game of which I'm not familiar!" How much greater compliment can one receive? Like so many of all the greats in a sport, what more can one say that hasn't already been said? I have followed Jack's career from the time he was an amateur. So, I'll just say that for me the memory of the 1986 Masters with Jack making the turn on the back nine, and walking up the 18th with his arm around his son brought tears to my eyes. For someone that had been written off as a member of the "over-the-hill-gang" he sure showed them!"

Chris Saunders sent in some statistical reminders of why Nicklaus is tops, including:

11 majors more than Ben Hogan and 7 more than Bobby Jones. A stat that is a quantum leap beyond those 2 players.
Although Snead won more tournaments on the PGA Tour, Nicklaus was in a different league when it came to the majors.
Between 63 and 75 was 1st or 2nd in the US PGA Championship seven times.
And still 10 majors (I think) in front of Woods.
His 1968 green in reg stats were not equalled in the next 30 years.

"Jack has won many tournaments, and he could still relate to his fans. He designed a good golf course, and still had time for fans and the game. Jack Nicklaus is the best, and will always be the best."

"What can I or anyone say about such a great golfer? He not only has won so many tournaments in a class fashion (not arrogantly), but he also possesses many runner up and 3rd finishes in big tournaments as well. He sticks to the basics and plays within himelf. His victory at the 86th Masters was probably my favorite of all time. All the upcoming players couldn't stand up to or ward off the old time great, whom they ALL thought had won his last major. It was great to see Seve humbled that day by the Golden Bear. On top of all this, he is a gentlemen and a scholar. I admire him greatly."

What he has meant to the game of golf is underestimated by those seized by the media, and those infected with "Tiger Mania", but to me, he is the greatest of all time."

"When I started to play at age 7 in 1970, Mr. Nicklaus was already the king of the courses. In 1976 I was very lucky to meet him at The Open at Turnberry. There are many great players today, but there will never ever be anyone like The Bear. Before anyone did anything - Jack Nicklaus did everything."
