"My wife and I met Paul at the Bay Hill Invitational, just after he completed his 2nd round. Although he had failed to make the cut, he was exceedingly gracious, which was extraordinary considering that he had just completed 2 incredibly frustrating days on the course where he had won his only title.
We were thrilled to see how well he performed this past weekend at the Shell Houston Open, particularly how he bounced back on Sunday after a disappointing triple bogey on the front nine. I would have to say it was his most inspiring Sunday back nine since I have been following his career. His character was tested with that triple, and he showed "true grit", in the way he came back.
Here's wishing him well for the remainder of the season, and for years to come." (April 24th, 2006)

Bob D. from Valley Springs says:
"I just looked back on my comments from past years. I would
like to correct my characterization of Paul as a working man's golfer.
Anyone who stays on the tour year after year has to have a gift not
available to the average working man. I'd love to see Paul push
over the top and win soon so he will be better known to the public.
I'm glad he's back. I still enjoy following him and explaining to
my friends who he is whenever his name comes up. Three years ago I
had a hat for him to sign but when I got to him, I didn't have a pen so
he kept going. If I see him this year, I'll have a hat and a
pen."

"I was disappointed Paul did not play Bay Hill where he was the winner back in 95 or 96. He did so well recently at Pebble I was looking forward to him having a great year."

"Great job last week at Pebble Beach - hope to see you at the top of the board again soon."

"I've followed his fortunes since reading "A Good Walk Spoiled" by John Feinstein. It's wonderful to see him on the tour again, and a top 10 finish at Pebble Beach gets his card, correct?
I never did know the reason for his absence from golf--injury?"

"Got interested in Paul after his brother operated on me for cancer...."

"Great round today at Disney! Glad to see you're playing again. Go Long Beach!"
Good news for his fans: he's playing again...
Teegolf from Long Beach
(who was kind enough previously to keep us informed of Paul Goydos'
status) writes:
"Paul is back. He played in the Nationwide event on 9/30/04, and is playing in the PGA Las Vegas Tournament 10/7/04. He is still trying to get a medical exemption so he can play on the PGA Tour next year without going to qualifying school.
Good Luck Paul."
Bob D. from Valley Springs, Ca.
says:
"I was pleased to see Paul in the field listing for the TPC Las Vegas. Then I noticed he had played on the Nationwide tournament at Rancho Cucumonga. I missed following him this year.
Paul: I hope whatever was giving you problems is in the past. Hopefully, I'll get to see you at the AT&T next year."
[Note: A few people - including Ron E from Long Beach, Jake from Saratoga Springs, Scott from Stockton and Matt R. from New York - asked when Paul is due to play again.
"GolfShark" was kind enough to write in and explain why Paul has not been playing this year. I'd like to respect his privacy and simply say he's at home and has no fixed date for a return to the golf course. Thanks to GolfShark for letting us know.
"Teegolf" from Long Beach also kindly adds, "Paul is currently on a medical leave and I believe may be back in a month or two. Being fully exempt he can petition to be allowed to play in all the tournaments he has missed this year. Although if he comes back soon enough he may earn enough to become exempt from that."

"I too got interested in Goydos because of "A Good Walk Spoiled." I miss seeing his name in the standings and watching him play. I figured he won about $650,000 last year. Not bad. Hope he returns soon."

"I'd like to chime in with many others and say that I miss following Paul on the tour. I've followed him since I read "A Good Walk Spoiled". I met him briefly at the Reno Tahoe Open and was very happy to see him do so well last year. Whatever is keeping you off the tour this year, I hope it gets resolved and you can come out soon.
Good luck."

"I caddied for Paul on the Nike Tour in Springfield, MO. in 1990 and 1991. I have been following him on the PGA ever since he got there. He is a great guy and I have missed him this year."
Gator from Tampa
says:
"I, along with The Judge and Gene played with Paul in the Long Beach Open (which he had won previously) the year before he earned his card at the PGA Qualifying School. He was a real gentleman, helped us a lot and an excellent player. We have followed his career from that day to this. Last year he had a very good season. The Judge, Gene and I, have wondered why he is not playing this year. What ever the reason, we hope it is only temporary and he returns to the PGA tour. The four of us have followed him throughout the seasons and miss seeing his name on the money list. We wish him well."
Greg Gilman from Aliso
Viejo, CA writes:
"I played with Paul back in 87 or 88 at a course in Long Beach called Skylinks. I went out as a single that day and happened to get paired with him. I
didn't know who he was at the time, but knew he had a lot of potential. I remember our scores that day, Paul 69 myself 74, and if Paul would have made any putts he would have shot 62. I have followed his career ever since he turned professional in 89, and currently live pretty close to him near Coto De
Caza, Ca. He is a good guy and I wish him happiness and good fortune on the PGA tour."
Bob S. from Jackson, MI
says:
"I've been following this golfer ever since I read a profile on him, and his arthritic hands. I always wish him the best out there but am dismayed quite often at his weekend scores!"

"Paul is a very talented golfer, but one statistic sticks out. His final round scoring average is his weakest stat. I'd love to know what his thoughts are on this
"Achilles heel"."
Tom Bickers, Glendora, CA
says:
"I played on Paul's team at Long Beach state. I remember the Las Vegas
Tournament; it was cold and I remember guys on our team were talking about beating Scott Verplank. Anyway for the 3 days Paul and I tied. Mike Ivy, who was our number #1 player at the time (Paul was usually no. #2 or #1, alternating with Mike) beat Scott Verplank. But Paul was discouraged about his 3 day score, and I was quite happy about mine, even though we tied. He obviously had higher hopes and goals than I did at the time and
knew his potential and cababilities. Paul is a great man. Our coach and his wife really helped him out a lot both with his golf game and also in life. Del and Marty Walker were their names. Marty was his high school coach and Del our college coach. Del has eagled every hole at Virginia Country Club, where Paul still plays out of. I have a great deal of respect and admiration for Paul both on and off the course, though I never really communicated it to him as I wish I had. Thanks Paul. Keep up the great work!"

"I had the pleasure of caddying for Paul twice on the Nike Tour. I was impressed with his manner and
attitude. It was an honor and maybe one day I will get the chance again,
if only during a practice round."
Ray S. from St. George, Utah
says:
"I had a chance to play with Paul in the Buick Invitational Pro-Am at Torrey Pines this year and the entire experience was very pleasant. Paul took the time to talk to everyone in our group one on one and as a group. We talked about everything from family to business to life on the tour. He was gracious, pleasant, and played an excellent round of golf. He accomodated everyone in the group and was a real professional. Paul receives a total thumbs up from me."

"I just wanted to say congratulations on Mr. Goydos finsh at Pebble. I have played the courses he grew up playing and saw him around the Long beach courses. It is great to see a player that grinds it out on tour. This man has
a lot of class."
Lorne from Va.
says:
"I became a fan of Paul Goydos reading A GOOD WALK SPOILED. What drew me to him was reading how he came back to the game after suffering with arthritic hands. I too suffer from a handicap; to wit, a stroke suffered during a double lung transplant. Mr Goydos is no Tiger Woods but just another golfer out there doing his best. I'm excited he qualified for the tour this year. There are many golfers I like but
it's much more fun watching tournaments when you have a favorite to root for and Paul Goydos is that for me. He just had a strong finish at the Pebble Beach Pro/Am birdying the 71st and 72nd holes to finish tied for 13th. I am looking forward to watching him play this year and hope he contends in a few tournaments so that I get a chance to watch him hit a few shots on TV on Saturday and Sunday. The only tournament I ever went to was several years back at Bay Hill where I found him to be a lugubrious lighthearted player with his playing partners who on that day were Scott Hoch and Grant Waite. I'm hoping to again go to a tournament this season where I can follow my favorite player around the course. Good luck this year Paul!"

Bob from California
writes:
"He's not a big name. He grinds on the tour and the only time I've seen him play, he seemed like a grumpy tempermental guy, but he worked as a substitute teacher before his touring days, he comes off a public course and he is kind of a working man's golfer. I'm glad he made it through Q-school so I can follow him each week. He's the kind of golfer I can identify with. His game is not chopped liver either. Winning 400K is not a bad year."
