Recent comments on Fred Funk

Bruno from Reston, VA writes:
"No way anyone would have believed Fred is one position away from being in the top 10 all time for PGA Tour earnings. It's a real testament to perserverance, dedication, and taking care of yourself. Well done and well deserved Fred." (Jan 17, 2007)

Angela R in South Florida says:
"With so many of the players too busy to pay attention to the fans at any time, Fred always finds the time. Wishes for a very Happy 50th." (June 13, 2006)

COMMENTS FROM 2005:

David Ennis, Salisbury, MD writes:
"My Dad, who is 81 & still playing, remembers Fred, while he was coaching  U.of Md.  Fred visted Green Hill CC in Salisbury and played a round with my Dad with a $5.00 nassau in the balance.  My dad laughs about this memory as contrasted with Fred's fantastic career success as a professional.  He remembers Fred as a regular guy with a great sense of humor.  We're all huge fans of Maryland's favorite golf son - not only for his golf success but his easy going style and personality.  Go Fred & go Terps!"

Erwin Funk from London, Ontario says:
"My drives are usually straight but not very far; however, I am always proud if my buddies call me Freddie. I am looking forward to every tournament you play in, but why do you get so little air time? You are #7 on the money list at this time. What do Funks have to do to get respect? I am so glad you decided to play in the Canadian Open. Let Mike Weir earn his money.

PS I like the tv commercial "these guys are good". Is this your son?"

Tom from Pittsburgh writes:
"I was lucky enough to play with Fred in the GGCC at Greensboro in 2000. Fred was so great to play with. He talked and joked with the foursome, and gave us tips from time to time.
It is truly special that one of the great guys on the tour has won this tournament. Congratulations Freddy, you really deserved this win!"

Ron B. from Virginia says:
"Fred, my son and I were ecstatic as you finished your win yesterday in the The Players Championship. He went to UMD and we lived in Maryland for 20 years where we followed with interest your golf career. A highlight for us was seeing you play in person a few years back at the Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines. You impressed me by your accessibility and friendliness on the course. Keep up the great work."

Greg Shrader from Gallipolis writes:
"A few years ago I saw an interview where Fred said his wife told him if you're not enjoying the game, quit. He said it woke him up and you can see his great attitude on the course, winning or losing. My wife said the same thing to me. I took Fred's attitude and I really enjoy the game."

DENNIS from JAX says:
"Congratulations to the "2005" PLAYERS CHAMPION. Well done."

RDH/Freeport, Maine writes:
"Player's Championship/Sawgrass/2005:"A battle of the BIG FOUR (or five or six or... a challenge of POWER GOLF;" BUT who prevails? Iron-man Fred Funk: through too much rain, too many delays, in too many fairways, on too many greens, yes-- with a few too many putts; but in the end Funky Fred becomes the oldest to ever win the tournament... and the BIG FOUR (or 5 or 6) were nowhere to be seen. Great to see determination and self-belief triumph. Fred: hope you enjoy the $1.4M and the exemptions and the status: you worked hard to earn them all."

Brian in Fairfax,VA says:
"I watched the whole TPC yesterday and I'm so elated that Fred won it. He's such a wonderful person and has such a passion for the game. When Fred was in the trap on 18 my stomach was in knots. Great going guy, you earned it..."

COMMENTS FROM 2004:

John Funk--Washington State writes:
"We Funk's have to stick together as we're probably all related. I'll be looking for you in a NW tournament. I like your enthusiasm. Good luck in 05."

CD from Oak Hill, VA says:
"Fred is an American success story. He's a late bloomer who did not benefit from a country club upbringing. Instead, his hard work and dedication have made Fred one of the top 20 money winners of all time on the PGA Tour. Well deserved, Fred."

JB from the Hill writes:
"I have followed Fred since I used to get range balls from him at the U Maryland golf course. Fred is one of the truly GOOD guys on the tour and is an amazing success story. So what if he doesn't like Scotland? A lot of the guys hate going to Scotland and they just grin and bear it. Fred is just being honest and I love that. He will earn his way on to the Ryder Cup team this year and anyone who says he doesn't deserve to be there is clueless! GO FREDDY!!"

Hugh McKeachan from Scotland says:
"...earlier this week whilst watching his interview on the Golf Channel UK I couldn't believe the insults he hurled at golf courses such as Carnoustie, Royal St. Georges and Royal Troon...It must not EVER be forgotten golf was invented in Scotland and our terrain represents the culture of golf the way it should be played; man against nature. A lot can be done by bulldozers in flattening land, flooding half of the course in unnatural water to create hazards but that cannot achieve what a true golfer can achieve given land like that at Carnoustie, Sandwich and Troon..."

Jim K. from Alabama writes:
"Fred: I hope you make the Ryder Cup team and I hope you shoot the eyes out of the cups... I've seen you make some phenomenal shots at the BC Open."

The driver from Rockford, IL says:
"Congratulations Fred on your 2nd place finish in Milwaukee! My husband and I will be cheering you on in the next few weeks and knowing you will be adding to your Ryder Cup points! You deserve to be on the team! Keep wearing Bobby Chang! Good luck at Whistling Straits!"

Ken from MD writes:
"I too am angry at the networks for not showing more of Freddie. Maybe if we complain to David Feherty he'll get the coverage he deserves. Anyway, Good Luck to you Fred. I'll keep hoping that you get on the first page more often."

Editor's note: Fred Funk took a lot of (mostly unprintable) flak from visitors for not playing at the Open. Best summarized with this comment from Tom in Canada...

"Nice to see Fred Funk play in a cartoon tournament rather than The Open."

Someone from Fred's old hood says:
"Wow, so I am not the only one who thinks they don't show Fred as often as some of the other golfers. His slow start also makes me think he is hurt. (did he fall over another bike in the driveway?)."

A visitor writes:
"I love his attitude and his approach to his game.A very good performance, this weekend. Happy Birthday."

Jim Funk, Kentucky says:
"My father said to me many years ago, 'someday there might be the Funk name on the leader board at a major.' He was talking about my brothers and me, but you have done the name proudly. Above all you have exhibited the main qualities my dad taught me through golf...have fun, be a gentleman, and respect the game along with those that play it. Regardless of how you do in the last round, thank you. My dad's name is Barclay Funk. My brothers are Don and Bud. My name is Jim Funk. I love it when I sign in to play golf and they ask me if I am related to Fred. I always say yes, at least in spirit."

Brenda from Herndon writes:
"Just enjoyed watching Fred's awesome play (what the cameras showed) at the U.S. Open.... Go Terp!"

Terry from Hanover, PA asks:
"Fred Funk is having a quite bad start this year. Is he injured?"

COMMENTS FROM 2003:

Henry from Texas says:
"I have followed Fred's career since 1988 and am very happy that he made the President's Cup team this year. I would like to see more of him on TV and agree with the visitor who commented that the network TV people spend too much time on who they consider the important golfers even when they are playing poorly."

A visitor writes:
"Why do the networks fail to show golfers such as Fred when he does well and will show every swing of people like Tiger, regardless of how badly he is doing."
