COMMENTS FROM 2005:

Talon from England says:
"I think Paul is GREAT!!!! Well I guess being from England makes him even more great. Plus he's hot. What more could you ask for???? :)"

Ryan from Dallas Texas writes:
"I think it is fantastic that Paul Casey went out and shot 4 rounds in the sixties to win the TCL Classic!!! Not many players can do that!"

A visitor says:
"I think Paul Casey is one of the nicest people I have ever met. Basketball players can go on TV saying they "hate" the other team and it is okay? What is that all about??

Americans need to grow up and become adults! I met Paul at the TPC Sawgrass last year and he was nicer than any player I have ever come across. If he hated us that much he wouldn't be so polite!

I just don't understand why we have to be so rude. Give the boy a chance to prove himself and then pass judgement. I can assure you I will make him feel at home in my town when he plays the TPC at Sawgrass in Jax, FL. Maybe you all should try it sometime!"

T. Anthony Holmes from Texas writes:
"Mr. Casey is certainly reaping the fruit of the seed he sowed. I understand the context of his statements and believe he should simply stop trying to 'explain' the situation and apologize to the American golf fan and America. I am a golfer, a father, husband and American. I served in the US Navy for nearly eleven years. I love my country. All of our faults taken together still place us at the top of the global chain. At a time when anti-american statements are plentiful I found Mr. Casey's statement to be totally offensive. I don't wish him good or bad. Until he fixes this problem I cannot support him. I was also saddened that Nike signed him on even after this flap. No more Nike's for my kids."

Mark Anderson of Morgan Hill, California says:
"Obviously, Mr. Casey is now paying a dear price for running his mouth inappropriately. Golf is indeed a gentleman's sport, and Mr. Casey has, unfortunately, proven himself to be somewhat boorish. This will surely follow him throughout his career.

But the real damage will be done to his psyche, and he has no one to blame but himself. Clearly, after missing the cut in Hawaii then withdrawing from the next 2 events for "counseling" the incident is playing with his mind.

This is a tough country, and our sports stars, for the most part, have spoken their mind then not backed off on what they said, no matter what the cost.

Maybe Mr. Casey should learn from Muhammed Ali, Ty Cobb or Ben Hogan. They said it, they didn't regret it, and if people don't like it, so what? They were larger than life. Mr. Casey seems diminished by this. I'd rather watch John Daly shoot an 80 on Sunday and come in 25th than Paul Casey win a PGA tournament, frankly."

COMMENTS FROM 2004:

Susan H. from Derry, N.Ireland writes:
"I feel so sorry for Paul Casey at the moment. I met him at the WGC American Express Championship in Kilkenny and he was such a sweetie, especially with the kids in the crowd. I'll be the first to admit, when I read that story I thought he was stupid to say those things, especially knowing how the press can twist things. However, in reflection, I know deep down he didn't mean it. He used the word 'hate' in terms of motivation to win. I'm sure there are loads of sportsmen and women who spend hours or days 'hating' the person they're playing against just to get the job done and win; and then go and have a drink or something with the person they just defeated. It's what sport is all about. 'Hate' was the wrong word for Paul to use and he knows it. He doesn't deserve all this negativity. He showed great mental strength to go on and win the World Cup with Luke Donald. I'm sure this has made him a stronger player and he now has the mental strength, as well as the physical ability to win a major in the near future. I hope he does let his new Nike clubs do the talking and he has a brilliant 2005 season!"

After Paul Casey's statements on the Ryder Cup, I was flooded with comments. Most were unprintable and hateful (an irony there?). Nearly all showed an alarming ignorance of what he actually said, as opposed to what was reported by British tabloids and other media outlets notorious for their flexibility with regard to the truth. Here a selection of the printable submissions from visitors:

"American taxpayers paid for his education raises a few issues: did they? Really? What education? Did the school get anything out of it? Where does Casey live? Does he pay taxes? Did the person who complained file and pay taxes? Did part of Casey's education protect his right to speak his mind freely? Is America still a democracy? Did the corporate sponsors make any money off him? If not, why do they sponsor young players? Has it something to do with marketing? Are we still allowed to think and speak? Anyway tell the critic to pet his hound, drink his Bud and chill out."

"American taxpayers paid for his education and he has American companies as his sponsors. I can't believe this website defended him (editor: I chose to comment on the reaction, not his statement - that's neither defending or attacking him). I read every word of his comments and they were horrible. You didn't even touch on the fact that he ripped Tom Lehman." (editor: fair point - I thought the comments on the US captaincy choice were unnecessary)

"Be open minded and use your brain! Understand that the press is only out to get celebrities! Give the guy a break...he is one we want on this tour for a long time! RELAX!!!"

"Ironic that someone lecturing us on how to behave resorts to conduct very unbecoming of a gentleman. I'll chalk it up to the stupidity of youth. But, if you find us truly that annoying, for heavens sake please return home."

"I read his comments and am quite shocked that he came to his conclusions. I guess he can play the game well, but a true golfer is so much more. He could probably be heckled right off the course. It could be very ugly? He probably should stay in Europe for couple of years, then change his name?"

"Red Sox fans hate the Yankees...Redskins fans hate the Cowboys...One European Ryder Cup player hates Americans...Big deal..."

"Don't be so stupid to bite the hand that feeds you......or go home!"

"This is the most misunderstood nation in the world, and its citizens, for the most part, have been the most generous in the world. Have they not welcomed you?? For your sake, and for golf's sake, I pray that that this will pass..."

"Golf has been a gentlemen's sport for a very long time. Tour members have shown respect for other players, fans and other countries no matter their personal political mind. Just look at Mr. Palmer. There is no greater gentleman in the sport. You are about to welcome a new tour member that does NOT maintain these standards of golf...you can never unshoot a bullet or unsay any comments. The damage has been done and it will hurt the game of golf forever. I myself, will never go to or watch on TV, any event with Mr. Casey playing."

Mary Catherine from Chicago says:
"What an awesome swing and player....plus he is hot. What more can you ask for??? I would love to see him play in the states more often!"

Julie, Livonia, MI writes:
"Yesterday we took my son to the Buick Open in Michigan and Paul Casey made my son's day. As we were standing at the 17th hole, Paul Casey had his golf ball in his hand - spotted my 6 year old son and kindly walked over and handed my son the ball and said "hear you go little man enjoy the game". Not only did this make my son's day but it gave him a better understanding of golf and what a gentleman's sport it can be. If you see Paul tell him thank you!"

COMMENTS FROM 2003:

Christie from Florida says:
"SO cute!! I watched him at the TPC Heron Bay when the Honda Classic was there and I thought he was not only good looking but a very good player. I look forward to seeing him play more in the states."

Ken T. from Atlanta writes:
"I met Paul at the WGC Amex in Atlanta...let's just say this kid can play. He hits the ball further then anyone I have seen besides JD and he is very accurate. He will be with the big guys soon."

Sarah from Chicago says:
"I think Paul Casey is the next big thing in golf. He is truly a gentleman on the golf course and always has time for autographs afterwards. I think he is so cute as well!!!"
