COMMENTS FROM 2005:

Kevin Harvey, Colchester, Essex, United Kingdom has a poem for us:

The swashbuckling Spaniard
With hands as soft as cream
Strutting around the golf course
Playing like a dream
Stirring the crowd into a frenzy
Like only he could do
In his favourite jumper
Of a dark navy blue
The seemingly impossible shots
That he played
God how I miss the Sevvy parade.

Javier Núñez from La Coruña writes:
"I began playing the game of golf in 1985 at age eleven thanks in great part to Seve.

Since then I have been an avid follower of both the European and American PGA Tours. Over the past twenty years I have seen many great players some of which have managed to stay on top of their game for most of this time.

Although Seve is not among those golfers who has been able to stay competitive through time he is without any doubt, at least in my mind, the most naturally gifted golfer the world has seen in the past thirty years and possibly the entire history of the game.

I cannot think of a better way to summarize what so many of us think and feel about Seve than what Lee Trevino was quoted for in the Golf Digest edition of April 2005: "Seve in his prime had the best golf I have ever seen. Nicklaus was the best chess player, Tiger always has a plan but Seve just made things happen"."

Keith Halvorsen, Mt Prospect IL says:
"I happened to catch Seve deep in the trees and shrubs off the 9th tee at the 1989 PGA Championship at Kemper Lakes. With no shot and forced to hit 5 iron left handed, he advanced his ball about 50 yards into a fairway bunker and still had 185yds to the green. In his signature 'go for broke' style, he stuffed his iron shot from the fairway bunker eight feet from the hole and drilled his putt for par. I've been The biggest Seve fan ever since.
It is that style and bravado that has brought myself and so many others to truly appreciate just how much charisma and imagination he has brought to a game that is just a continuation of imperfections and opportunities. It is also a reminder of what a great entertainer he was for all of us and what this very 'vanilla' game that we continue to watch and see is missing.

Regardless of what future successes he may or may not have, it is his past that has brought so many to the game and always will. I thank Seve for being such a great inspiration for me and so badly want to see another Sunday charge in the not so distant future. I wish him well!"

Ed from Staten Island writes:
"Seve is still my favorite golfer of all time. I regret that he has not been healthy enough to compete at the level he once did 15 years ago. With all the pros who grew up spoon fed on lessons, and the acoutrements that come with wealth, perhaps it's Seve who's among the last of the self-made players. (Perhaps it's all that swing tinkering that put so much wear and tear on his back). Nonetheless, it is my sincere hope that Seve will be able to regain his form and health and grace us with his magic two years from now when he is elligible for the Champion's Tour."

A visitor says:
"He was the best golfer in the world when I took up the game at the age of ten. The first tournament I attended was the 1988 British Open (getting a day off school because of the Saturday washout!), and I will never forget watching from the stands as he played that breathtaking chip shot at 18. I also managed to pat him on the back on the 18th when he won the 1994 B&H at St Mellion. Unfairly labelled a wild and lucky player, he was in fact the most naturally gifted golfer who has ever played. The greatest."

COMMENTS FROM 2004:

A visitor writes:
"I have been to the Open this week and noticed that RBS are running a 'Memorable Open Moments' voting competition. I was pleased to see that two of the moments were from the legend that is Seve. Even more pleasing was to see that Seve was winning the vote!! All the moments are online to watch on Opengolf.com, well worth a visit and don't forget to vote for Seve!!"

Janet from Marlborough, Wilts, UK says:
"We had so much pleasure following Seve round (especially Wentworth) - sorry to hear he may never compete again and wish him well and thanks to him for simply being Seve - one of the greatest golfers I have ever seen."

A visitor writes:
"Seve was one of the wizards of golf in his prime. He is my idol."

Michael S. says:
"One of the most charismatic golfers there is in the world today. It is sad to see his decline over the last few years with back problems but in my view he will always be one of the all time greats."

Daryush Taleghani from OKC, OK, USA writes:
"The greatest natural golfer of all time, fluidly making his way around a golf course, with the eyes of a tiger."

COMMENTS FROM 2003:

Juan Castanedo from Pedreña tells us:
"I was born and live less than one hundred meters from Seve. For me, he is a great man. I think that he is the kind of man who could do everything really well. He has an incredible charisma, just watching him you notice that you are in front of a great man. He could not be the best player in golf, but he can be the most charismatic player in history."

Tim writes:
"I think he's a great golfer, that's why he's my idol! I myself come from Holland, and received his autograph via mail after an email to seveballesteros.com! He's a great golfer who deserves respect from the youngsters, like Sergio Garcia respects him!"

Tony from Seattle says:
"Seve was/is a touch of class. There has never been anyone more exciting to watch, not even Palmer. He's played terribly for six years now but who cares? Memories of the 83 Masters, 84 Open and 88 Open will never fade."

COMMENTS FROM 2002:

Andy from the UK writes:
"I used to love watching Ballesteros in his heyday because he had an uncanny ability to make his pars even when he was missing greens and fairways. He will not go down in history as one of the straightest hitters but his short game was better than anyones I've ever seen."

William Bannister from Shropshire, England says:
"I think he is the most exciting and electrifying man in golf, he is such a tough competitor and with his unique charisma he has put european golf on the map. He has taken on the...americans and beaten them! A true hero."
