Comments on Rich Beem from 2003 and earlier

N.B. The book "Bud, Sweat and Tees" refered to in many comments is still available from Amazon and all good bookstores.

Bryan B. from Great Falls, MT says:
"I watched Beemer win by one over Woods and rooted for him the whole way, and since he has become my favorite golfer. Bud, sweat and tees is a great story of Beemer's life. No faky, pitty party, crying when someone heckles me kinda guy. Who needs Tiger anyway? Party on Richy boy!"

James from London writes:
"I have just finished reading 'Bud, Sweat & Tees' and it was the best book I have ever read. I am a Club professional from Great Britain so I know what it's like to work in a golf shop for a pittance (but not what it's like to win the PGA Championship of America with Tiger Woods breathing down your neck!!). Keep up the good work Rich and I hope to see you in the British Open at Royal St Georges this month."

Bryant from Michigan writes:
"I became a Rich Beem fan sitting on my couch as he won the Kemper Open. I read the book, Bud, Sweat & Tees and really became a big fan. Rich and I share the same birthday, August 24th and when he won the PGA Championship I was there to see him shake off his nerves and beat the best player in the world. Rich I hope to see you on the President's Cup Team this year and possibly the Ryder Cup in 2004. Good Luck!"

COMMENTS FROM 2002:

A School Nurse in Las Vegas says:
"I don't know much about golf, but I met Rich in October 1999 at the Hard Rock Hotel. I was sitting at the center bar waiting for the Sting "Brand New Day" concert to begin. This really nice guy came up and started talking and bought me a drink. He was friendly, intelligent and funny, and I had no idea who he was! He then asked me what I was doing there - and I explained that I had Sting tickets, although I was a bit bummed because I could only afford standing room only.

I'm a school nurse and I was there with my nurses aide on a girl's night out. I could hardly believe it, but he said he had tickets too - great seats though, not standing room. Do you know, this guy offered to exchange his tickets for mine. I was incredulous! I asked why, and he explained that he was Rich Beem, the golfer (of course, I'd never heard of him...) and that he'd seen Sting before anyway - he said he knew what it was like to be one of the "hardworking regular people" ... so we switched! He then tried to give the standing room tickets to some of his entourage, but they declined so he gave them back to me, and I'm embarrassed to say I sold them to a couple of guys in line! We had great seats and really loved the show, and Rich Beem made my night. I'm a big believer in karma - he was kind to us and gave us something just because he could - and now I am so happy to see good things come to him. Congratulations Rich on your fabulous success this year."

Darren from Pittsburgh writes:
"I've been a fan of Rich Beem's since his Kemper Open win a few years back. Its been a up and down ride ever since. Til this year, most folks had no idea who he was. While I am ecstatic with his PGA Championship win, I am afraid he is losing his focus again...C'mon Rich, don't take a 2 year sabbatical again. You should be a top 20 player easily."

Patrick in Colorado says:
"I had the pleasure to meet Rich a couple of times in college. Everything you see, hear and read about Rich is just like the person I met. He is truly a nice guy and so easy going. And his success doesn't seem to have changed him one bit. How can you not like his golf game either? He plays the game the way it should be played. I am so happy for Rich and I know he will continue to have a great career."

A visitor writes:
"I've been a fan of Rich's since that crazy win at Kemper a few years back. I remember the chant "Rich is Rich" after he won. Hope to see Rich in Williamsburg in a couple of weeks. Hoping Rich gets that new putter working this week and wins the Texas Open. All the fans of Rich Beem will be leading the cheers - maybe the Ryder Cup in a few years. Win."

Mary L. from Sarnia, Ontario says:
"He is an everyday kind of guy. He is not a work-a-holic, but a guy who loves the game as much as we regular folks. I read the book "Bud, Sweat and Tees" a while ago, and I have followed Rich's progress ever since. One word to Rich - don't sell yourself short. You are every bit as good as the rest of the guys on tour. And now you have shown yourself to be a "major contender". Good for you! May this be the beginning of a great career."

Bob from Orlando writes:
"The man has guts. It was refreshing to see a PGA golfer stare down 'Tiger' and not back down. Hopefully some of the other tour 'weenies' will take note. Congratulations Rich on a job well done."

Lynne from Monterey says (following his PGA Championship win):
"Rich, You pysched out Tiger today with your brilliant play! Magnificent! Today you get Augusta, and a great addition to your resume! Love to follow this guy!"

Brian Olson from Plymouth, MN writes:
"What can you say about a guy who approaches life like the rest of us. I watched his victory at the Kemper and thought it was pretty cool, but after reading the book about his trials and tribulations with joining the PGA and his former caddie, I became a huge fan. To witness 2 of his fabulous 4 days winning the PGA in my home state of Minnesota over Tiger was fabulous. Rich, congrats and best of luck in the future. Remain the every day lunch pail guy you are as much as you can! PS...my wife met your Aunt at Hazeltine...she set the record straight about some parts of the book. Celebrate with your buddy in Seattle and the boys in El Paso."

Herb from St.Louis, MO says:
"I just finished reading 'Bud, Sweat, and Tees' on Thursday and Rich goes out and wins the PGA Championship this weekend. I just wanted to tell him he has a new fan for life. From one 'normal guy' to another, congratulations and have a few cocktails for me."

Lynne from Pebble Beach writes:
"This guy is so 'unserious' and self deprecating; he has the most happy-go-lucky, refreshing outlook about his own talent. Clearly, he is surprising no one more then himself with his recent play (up to 8/17/02). I became aware of him through an amusing book about his caddie, and the sometimes decadent lifestyle while on the road. Rich represents the regular guy. If he can come up into the ranks and surprise the vets, anyone can! Thanks Rich for restoring faith in the fact that with hard work and focus, any "regular guy/gal" can acheive success! Keep up the great work! We follow you weekly!"
